In a remarkable display of resilience, the Winthrop University women’s basketball squad triumphed over UNC Asheville on the Bulldogs’ home court, ending their three-game losing streak. The Eagles rallied back from a deficit to steal a riveting 70-64 overtime victory on Wednesday Night.

The contest started fiercely with Winthrop establishing an early 9-4 lead, while UNC Asheville managed to claw back and tie the score at 16 all, before the Eagles pulled away with the last three points in the first quarter. Winthrop, undeterred, replied with a 10-0 run of their own and managed to close half time trailing by just two points.
Despite UNC Asheville getting off to a promising start in the winged third quarter, the Eagles managed to tie the score at 41 points each, midway through the period. Eventually, Winthrop found themselves trailing by 4 points going into the final quarter. In the fourth, neither team had the upper hand, with the largest lead being a mere two points on three separate occasions. With the game in the balance at 62 a piece in overtime, Jada Ryce’s free throw was enough to tip the scales in favor of Winthrop. From that point, the Eagles never looked back. Gasaway further stretched Winthrop’s lead, putting the Eagles up by three.
