The second quarter was characterized by fierce runs from both teams, with UNC Asheville starting off with an 8-point lead. Winthrop, undeterred, replied with a 10-0 run of their own and managed to close half time trailing by just two points.

Despite UNC Asheville getting off to a promising start in the winged third quarter, the Eagles managed to tie the score at 41 points each, midway through the period. Eventually, Winthrop found themselves trailing by 4 points going into the final quarter. In the fourth, neither team had the upper hand, with the largest lead being a mere two points on three separate occasions. As the clock ticked down, Marissa Gasaway’s clutch jumper tied the game at 58 points each, forcing the contest into overtime.

A Dramatic Overtime

With the game in the balance at 62 a piece in overtime, Jada Ryce’s free throw was enough to tip the scales in favor of Winthrop. From that point, the Eagles never looked back. Gasaway further stretched Winthrop’s lead, putting the Eagles up by three. The Bulldogs tried to rally but were only able to score one more time before being silenced by the Eagles’ defense and a closing series of successful free throws.

Beyond the Scoresheet

This victory was more than just a win for the Eagles. It avenged their three losses to UNC Asheville last season. Moreover, it marked Winthrop’s first win at UNC Asheville since 2015, fueling their confidence going into the remainder of the season.
