Sponsor Our ArticlesRock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop left-handed pitcher Riley Huge has been selected by the Oakland Athletics in the 13th round of the 2024 MLB Draft. The senior hails from Davenport, FL, and was chosen as the 376th pick overall.
In the 2024 season, Huge showcased his talent by finishing tied for 10th in the nation in strikeouts with 111 at the conclusion of the regular season. His stellar performance ranked him 2nd in the Big South conference and 1st on the Winthrop University team. Huge pitched 66.2 innings over 13 games, achieving a 5-5 record and leading the team in wins.
One of Huge’s standout moments came on Mar. 2 against Maine when he set a new standard for excellence. In that game, he pitched a remarkable 7.2 innings, allowing only one hit and two walks while recording a career-high 20 strikeouts. This outstanding performance not only broke Winthrop’s single-game strikeout record, which had stood for 21 seasons but also marked the highest number of strikeouts by any NCAA pitcher since 2017.
For his exceptional efforts throughout the season, Huge was named the Big South Starting Pitcher of The Week in consecutive weeks on Feb. 27 and Mar. 4. Additionally, his dominant performance against Maine earned him the title of National Pitcher of the Week on Mar. 4 by the NCBWA, Perfect Game, and the NCAA.
Riley Huge’s selection by the Oakland Athletics marks him as the 37th Eagle in Winthrop University’s history to be chosen in the MLB Draft. This achievement follows last year’s draft pick of utility player Brody Hopkins by the Seattle Mariners in the sixth round.
