Rock Hill, South Carolina: Winthrop University announced that Johntavia Shaw and Kelton Talford have been celebrated as the Comporium Student-Athletes of the Month for their commendable athletic performances and academic achievements.
The basketball sensation, Talford, stole the spotlight by playing and starting in all eight games the Eagles participated in December. The prolific scorer sustained an impressive average of 18.0 points per game. Moreover, he racked up an average of 6.4 rebounds alongside 1.5 assists per game. The icing on the cake was shooting nearly 70% from the field, bolstering his reputation as a key player in the team.
Equally impressive, Shaw marked a significant achievement in Winthrop’s indoor track and field. The celebrated athlete smashed a 20-year-old school record and claimed the 1st place in two field meets held in January. Shaw recorded a notable victory in shot put at the Carolina Challenge from January 19 to 20, with a mark that established a new personal record and a fresh school record.
Johntavia Shaw’s winning streak didn’t stop at the Carolina Challenge. The following weekend at the VMI Invitational, she notched another victory in the women’s shot put. Her record of 13.38m was her second win in a week and one of three victories claimed by the Eagles that day.
The awe-inspiring performances of Talford and Shaw have once again highlighted the level of talent prevalent at Winthrop University. Their contribution to their respective sports not only uplifts the university’s name, but also sets a path for the up and coming athletes. The university community congratulates Kelton Talford and Johntavia Shaw on their phenomenal achievements and look forward to more victories in the future.
