Winthrop University Athletics Announces Shaw And Talford As Student-Athletes Of The Month
In a significant boost for Winthrop University Athletics, two sterling student-athletes have emerged triumphant in a rigorous selection process. Johntavia Shaw and Kelton Talford have been announced as the Comporium Student-Athletes of the month, a testament to their incredible performances and unwavering dedication.
A Stellar Start for Talford
Kelton Talford, known for his high-octane performances, started in all eight games in December. His extraordinary skill set secured an average of 18.0 points per game and 6.4 rebounds per game. Moreover, Talford managed to maintain an impressive average of 1.5 assists per game, hitting the basket nearly 70% of the time.
Shaw Shatters Records
Johntavia Shaw earned the prestigious title for her phenomenal record-breaking performance in Winthrop’s indoor track and field meets. She took 1st place in two competitions this month, showcasing her exceptional talent and hard work.
At the Carolina Challenge held from January 19-20, Shaw won the shot put with a remarkable mark of 14.17m. This new Personal Record (PR) broke the school record that had stood strong for 21 years. The older record, 13.87m, was set by Sara Lewis in 2003. Not one to rest on her laurels, Shaw continued her winning streak. The following weekend at the VMI Invitational, she won the women’s shot put again, this time with a mark of 13.38m. This second victory was one of three claimed by the eagles that day.
