Despite an early home run surge that saw them take a brief lead, the Eagles ultimately fell 5-3 to the Gamecocks. South Carolina’s strong pitching and timely hitting allowed them to regain control, leaving Winthrop looking to bounce back in their next game.
Rock Hill, South Carolina – It was a chilly afternoon at Founders Field on February 18, 2025, as the Winthrop Eagles went head-to-head with the South Carolina Gamecocks in what turned out to be a fiercely contested baseball clash. The temp was low, but the excitement was high as fans braved the cold to cheer on their teams. In the end, Winthrop didn’t manage to warm up enough for a win, falling to South Carolina with a final score of 5-3.
As the game kicked off, excitement filled the air when both teams demonstrated their hitting prowess in the first inning. The Gamecocks got things started with a bang as Kennedy Jones made his mark by hitting his first home run of the year. Not to be outdone, Winthrop’s Koby Kropf responded with a clutch two-run home run of his own—what a start for both sides! The scoreboard lit up at 2-2 in no time, and the crowd was pumped.
The thrill didn’t stop there, because Winthrop found a way to snag a brief lead in the fourth inning. With a well-placed RBI fielder’s choice, they pushed ahead, making it 3-2. The fans erupted in cheers, believing they could take control of the game. It was a moment of hope, but the Gamecocks were not ready to roll over just yet.
South Carolina wasted no time in taking back the lead. Talmadge LeCroy came in clutch with a two-RBI double, driving in a much-needed run that regained the lead at 4-3. The Gamecocks continued to extend their advantage in the sixth inning when Nathan Hall came through with another RBI double that brought KJ Scobey home, pushing the score to 5-3.
On the mound, Brandon Stone was a standout for South Carolina. Coming in for relief, he put on an impressive performance, striking out three batters and only allowing one hit over 3.2 innings. Parker Marlatt added to the team’s pitching success with a perfect eighth inning, and Brendan Sweeney put a cap on the victory by pitching a scoreless ninth to earn a save.
On the pitching side, Jarvis Evans got the start for South Carolina, showing excellent control as he struck out five batters while allowing only five hits and three runs—all without giving up any walks in his 3.1 innings of work.
Hitting was a team effort for the Gamecocks, with both Kennedy Jones and Jase Woita showcasing their talents by notching two hits each. Jones’s performance was particularly valuable, contributing two RBIs to the team’s cause. In fact, eight out of the nine Gamecock hitters managed to get at least one hit throughout the victory.
Despite the setback, the Winthrop Eagles showed resilience and fighting spirit throughout the game. Fans can hope for a bounce-back performance in their next outing as the team gears up for future matchups. Meanwhile, the Gamecocks turned their sights to their next game, set to host Queens University on February 19, 2025, at 4 p.m. at Ray Tanner Field at Founders Park.
As this baseball season unfolds, all eyes will be on Winthrop University to see how they recover from this tough loss and continue to grow as a team. With plenty of games still to come, there’s no doubt the Eagles will be back in contention soon!
