After a disappointing trio of losses at the Big South conference, Winthrop University’s women basketball team is determined to bounce back as they travel to face the UNC Asheville Bulldogs. With a current overall standing at 7-10 and 1-3 Big South, the Winthrop Eagles are hoping to break their losing streak during Wednesday night’s game.
The team’s previous performance at the Big South conference against Radford resulted in a loss, 63 to 55. The defeat was their third straight, creating an even greater urgency to rectify their course this week. Despite the losses, several notable performances emerged. Leonor Paisana, standing just four three-pointers away from securing a place in the Top 10 for career triples in school history, showcased impressive skill. In the meantime, Nyah Stallings achieved a season and career-high in points during the Radford game.
While struggling recently, the Winthrop Eagles have demonstrated notable strengths throughout the course of the season. The team currently holds the third position in the Big South in terms of scoring defense at 60.2 ppg. In addition, they lead the league in steals per game at 10.8, providing an edge that could prove valuable in the upcoming matchup.
Their achievements do not end here, with the Eagles tied for 27th position nationally in turnovers forced per game. They also hold respectable positions in the Big South in terms of blocks per game and rebounds per game. Marissa Gasaway has cemented her name at the top of the conference in rebounding, and Jada Ryce holds the lead for steals per game within the conference.
As they gear up for the game against UNC Asheville, the Eagles are venturing into familiar enemy territory. Historically, the series has been a tough one, with the Bulldogs currently holding a 43-39 lead against the Eagles in total matchups. However, this has not deterred the determination of the Winthrop team as they aim to reverse their fortune on the North Carolina court.
After NC Asheville, the Eagles will return home to face the defending league champion, Gardner-Webb on January 20. The Winthrop women’s basketball team moves ahead full steam, hoping to break their losing spell and bring more accolades to their university.
