Eagles Prepare to Face Radford on Saturday Afternoon

The Winthrop University Eagles will be hitting the road on Saturday, travelling to Radford, Virginia, in the hunt for a win. The women’s basketball team stands at 7-9 currently with 1-2 in the Big South. They will be looking to get back on track after a recent 59-43 loss to Presbyterian on home ground Wednesday night.

The Eagles will face off against Radford University Highlanders at 2:00 PM (EST) on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2024, at the Carilion Clinic Court at the Dedmon Center. This marks the 87th encounter between the two teams, with Radford taking the lead in the series, 67-19. The teams have seen equal success in the last five encounters, with Winthrop slightly leading 3-2.

Series History vs. Radford

The first meeting between these teams was back on Jan. 19, 1984, with Radford coming out on top with a 79-62 win in Rock Hill. Although they won the first 33 meetings, Winthrop turned the tide on Feb. 17, 1999, by winning 78-53 on home ground. Their first win in Radford came two years later on Feb. 7, 2001, by a score of 62-56. However, this has been a difficult venue for the Eagles who have won only three times ever in Radford. Their last victory there dates back ten years.

In their previous game, Winthrop fell short against Presbyterian with a final score of 59-43, marking their second consecutive defeat in the Big South contest. Despite the loss, the game saw some notable performances. Leonor Paisana is now just six three-pointers away from securing a place in the school history Top 10 for career triples (78). Additionally, Ronaltha Marc attained her eighth game this season in double figures for points and set her career-high in steals.

General admission tickets are on sale for $40 for the 2023-24 season. Single-game tickets stand at $5, while courtside season tickets are available at $80. As for the broadcasting, all games for the 2023-24 season, home and away, will occur live on ESPN+.
