In a bid to bounce back from a recent loss to Charleston Southern, Winthrop’s women’s basketball team is set to host the Longwood Lancers on Saturday afternoon. Combining sports and social responsibility, the game has been designated as a “Think Pink” event, an endeavor aimed at raising breast cancer awareness.
The Eagles, Winthrop’s women basketball team, fell short in their last match against Charleston Southern, with a final score of 65-50. Despite the loss, the team managed to outscore CSU in points off turnovers (17-11) and second-chance points (7-3). Winthrop’s shooting stats remained steady at 35% from the field and 52% from the free throw line.
As the Longwood Lancers visit for the 32nd meeting between the two teams, Winthrop holds a series lead of 18-13. The Eagles have proven their mettle in the past encounters with the Lancers, having won both games last year and boasting a three-game winning streak.
Winthrop’s performance so far in the 2023-2024 season is reflective of their high-octane game. The team has scored 50 or more points in the last seven games and currently holds a forceful home record. Winthrop also leads the conference and ranks 38th in the nation for forcing turnovers per game (19.7). Taking a look at individual performances, forward Marissa Gasaway and guard Jada Ryce have been providing outstanding contributions, with Gasaway leading the team and conference in rebounding at 9.6 per game, and Ryce leading the team with 10.8 points per game.
For those who wish to witness the “Think Pink” game in person, General Admission season tickets are currently on sale for $40. Single-game tickets are available at $5, and courtside season tickets for $80. Alternatively, fans can tune into ESPN+ for live coverage of the match.
Following the Longwood showdown, Winthrop will be hosting Radford on February 14th as they wrap up their two-game homestand. Fans can follow all the latest news and updates on Winthrop’s women’s basketball program via the team’s official Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook handles.
