Coming off their first victory over Gardner-Webb, the defending conference champions, with a final score of 61-50 on Saturday, Winthrop University’s women’s basketball team are ready to maintain their streak as they prepare to host Charleston Southern on Wednesday night. The women’s team (9-10, 3-3 Big South) is aiming for their third straight win.
The previous meeting between the Eagles and the Buccaneers ended in favor of the Buccaneers, who currently lead the series with a score of 33-32. Charleston Southern came out victorious in both encounters last year. However, with their renewed spirits following their recent victory over Gardner-Webb and their determination to equalize the score, the Eagles are set to make this a challenging matchup for the Bucs.
In their most recent match, the Eagles claimed a victory against Gardner-Webb, the first time they’ve accomplished this feat in four seasons, finally snapping a nine-game losing streak in the series. With a final score of 61-50 at the Winthrop Coliseum, the Eagles out-scored Gardner-Webb in every consecutive quarter post-first, shooting an impressive 42% for the game with 38% of their three-point attempts landing successfully. Significantly, three Eagles reached double figures in scoring, contributing greatly to the team’s win.
The Eagles have shown considerable potential and resilience despite being only halfway through the season. As a program, Winthrop has an all-time record of 607-901, with a home score of 348-325. The Eagles have also proved their mettle in scoring defense, securing the second position in the Big South with 59.8 points per game, and ranking 33rd nationally for forcing turnovers per game.
Winthrop’s Marissa Gasaway leads the team and the conference in rebounding with 9.6 per game. In close heels, Jada Ryce is awaiting her 500th career point, currently leading the team with 9.4 points per game. She also ranks second in the league with 2.0 steals per game. Leonor Paisana, on the other hand, is just one three-pointer away from joining the Top 10 in school history in career triples with 83.
The Eagles’ next match after Charleston Southern will be a challenging face-off against Big South pre-season favorite High Point on Saturday, January 27. Fans are eagerly waiting to see if the Winthrop women’s team can extend their winning streak and maintain their upward momentum.
