Winthrop University’s women’s basketball team faced a tough loss in their home finale against High Point in an overtime thriller on Wednesday night. The final score stood at 65-64 in favor of High Point, leaving Winthrop with a record of 13-15 overall and 7-8 in the Big South conference. High Point improved to 18-10 overall and 11-2 in the Big South.
The game started off slowly, with both teams struggling to find their offensive rhythm. Winthrop managed to take a slight lead in the first quarter, but High Point fought back in the second quarter to take a narrow lead going into halftime. The game remained tightly contested throughout the second half, with multiple lead changes and ties.
Despite Winthrop’s efforts to force overtime with a late jumper, High Point ultimately secured the victory with a basket in the final seconds of the extra session. Marissa Gasaway led Winthrop with an impressive performance, recording 18 points and 18 rebounds.
Marissa Gasaway’s standout performance included a career-high in rebounds and solid scoring contributions. Jada Ryce and Leonor Paisana also put up strong numbers, each scoring double figures in points.
Winthrop will now look ahead to their regular-season finale against Gardner-Webb on March 2nd. The team will aim to bounce back from this tough loss and finish the season on a high note.
