Yelm, Washington kicked off the 2024 high school football season in thrilling fashion Friday night, facing off against familiar rivals Mount Tahoma at home. This matchup revived memories of their previous encounter in the WIAA Class 3A quarterfinals last fall, and it didn’t disappoint fans. The game commenced at 7 p.m. Pacific time and was streamed live on the NFHS Network. A heat index soaring over 100 degrees prompted a mandatory team water break during the first quarter.
The excitement on the field was palpable as both teams battled hard. Yelm ultimately emerged victorious with a score of 42-34. It was a close contest with several lead changes that kept everyone on the edge of their seats. From the get-go, Mount Tahoma’s quarterback, Cordero, connected on impressive plays, finishing the game with 11 completions for 285 yards and three touchdowns. Meanwhile, for Yelm, Myers put on a show, completing 9 of 11 passes for 88 yards and scoring two touchdowns on the ground, showcasing his dual-threat ability.
Mount Tahoma’s Diaz contributed with 30 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Durr had a standout performance with 154 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Yelm’s own Nathan Ford also made headlines, rushing for 162 yards and one touchdown. The game swung in Yelm’s favor in the second half as they scored three times within seven minutes, demonstrating their dominance.
As the game drew to a close, Mount Tahoma made a valiant effort, scoring a late touchdown; however, it wasn’t enough to turn the tides, leaving Yelm with the victory. Both teams showed incredible spirit, setting the stage for an exciting season ahead.
