York County, S.C. (Nov. 14, 2024) – The United Way of York County has been awarded a grant of $5,000 from the Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina. This funding is part of the foundation’s effort to support nonprofits that aim to combat poverty across the state and beyond.

Immediate Needs Grant

The Sisters of Charity Foundation is known for providing Immediate Needs grants to organizations that fulfill basic necessities for individuals facing poverty. In this latest funding cycle, the foundation distributed a total of $453,000 among 88 different organizations. United Way of York County is among the beneficiaries, which will enhance their initiatives aimed at achieving financial stability for families in the region.

Focus on Single Mothers

This grant will specifically assist the Financial Stability Network run by United Way of York County. The President of United Way, Rebecca Melton, expressed appreciation for the continued support, noting that “the foundation’s generosity enables the United Way to extend assistance to more people.” A significant number of the families benefiting from this support are single mothers, a demographic that faces substantial financial hurdles. Statistics highlight that approximately 68% of single mothers experience difficulties in managing their finances.

One-on-One Coaching

To address these challenges, United Way provides one-on-one financial coaching to assist these women. The program emphasizes education and guidance, which has notably allowed participants to improve credit scores, reduce debt, and build emergency savings. With the help of the Sisters of Charity Foundation, United Way aims to extend its reach to more families struggling with financial issues.

Overall Funding Impact

In this round of funding, the Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina has committed over $1.1 million, distributing 120 grants to nonprofit organizations statewide. The Midlands region has received particular attention, with 21 organizations receiving collective support of $155,000.
