York County Waives Landfill Fees for Storm Debris

YORK COUNTY, SC – The aftermath of Hurricane Helene left many folks in our community reeling from the effects of the storm, with reports of downed trees pouring in from every corner of the county. The storm not only shook our homes but also scattered limbs and brush across roads, yards, and open spaces. In a bid to ease the cleanup process for residents, the York County government has made a significant announcement: they will be waiving landfill fees for brush, limbs, and tree debris.

Why the Change?

As storm debris piled up, the county recognized the challenge ahead for local families and sought a way to lend a helping hand. Typically, residents are allowed to dispose of up to one ton of yard waste at the landfill each month without a fee, but after such a devastating storm, the usual rules felt a bit too limiting. So, from now until October 14th, individuals can bring their storm-related debris to the landfill without worrying about the usual charges.

What Does This Mean for Residents?

This is great news for our community! The waiving of fees not only supports residents in their cleanup efforts but also aims to speed up the process at the landfill. All vehicles will still need to be weighed in, but by eliminating the fees, the time spent entering and exiting should decrease significantly. The bottom line? Less hassle for those who are already working hard to restore their yards and properties following the storm.

Getting Your Refund

A little extra consideration goes a long way! If you happened to drop off brush at the landfill on either Saturday or today (Monday) and were charged a fee, you’re in luck. You can apply for a refund if you have proof of payment. To make it easy, just get in touch with the York County Finance department by calling 803-684-8528 and selecting option #3.

The Community Comes Together

It’s heartwarming to see the community come together, proving that we’re all in this together during tough times. Cleanup won’t happen overnight, but the county’s decision to waive landfill fees for a limited time is a small yet impactful way to support recovery. Local families can focus their efforts on cleaning up and rebuilding rather than worrying about extra fees.

So grab your gloves and get to work! Together, we can clear the debris and help restore the beauty of our homes and neighborhoods. Whether it’s a fallen limb in your front yard or tree debris scattered throughout the neighborhood, let’s tackle the mess one piece at a time. And remember, we’ve got the support of York County in this effort.

Important Reminders

  • Landfill fees are waived for private citizens through October 14th.
  • Keep in mind that all vehicles must be weighed in when visiting the landfill.
  • If you paid a fee on Saturday or Monday, don’t forget to claim your refund!

As recovery from Hurricane Helene continues, let’s stay united, support one another, and work together to clean up our beloved York County.
