York County School Board Elections Heat Up

The excitement is palpable across York County, where the clock is ticking down to the upcoming school board elections. As candidate filing came to a close, a host of enthusiastic individuals have stepped forward, eager to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of education in their local districts. With several contested races on the horizon, it’s shaping up to be quite the election season!

Fort Mill: A Diverse Range of Candidates

In Fort Mill, voters have the chance to elect three at-large board members from a competitive lineup of six candidates. The race features familiar names: incumbents Anthony Boddie, Scott Frattaroli, and Kristy Spears are back in the ring, alongside newcomers Ellen Abramo, Denise Casey, and Michelle Hoffman.

Anthony Boddie, who has been a dedicated community leader since his move to Fort Mill in 2006, is passionate about serving his community. His numerous roles, including mentoring high school students and leading significant local initiatives, showcase his deep commitment to education. With a rich background in leadership and a strong connection to the community, he hopes to secure another term on the board.

Dr. Scott Frattaroli has been serving the Fort Mill School District for over 18 years. As a well-rounded educational leader with deep roots in the area, he is poised to continue advocating for student needs. Meanwhile, Kristy Spears, the board’s current chair, has a long history of community involvement and seeks to leverage her experience to enhance the district’s offerings.

Challenging the incumbents, Ellen Abramo stands out as a passionate educator who values open communication with stakeholders. Denise Casey, a board-certified registered nurse, aims to ensure the emotional and cognitive well-being of students, while Michelle Hoffman brings a wealth of teaching experience to the table.

Rock Hill: Competitive Races Across the Board

Meanwhile, in Rock Hill, the elections are particularly noteworthy, as every seat on the board is contested. Voters will have their pick from a variety of candidates in multiple districts.

For Seat 1, incumbent Patrice Reid Cherry faces competition from Montrio Belton, an accomplished educator and attorney with an extensive background in educational leadership, and Matt Hiers, a true community advocate who has volunteered extensively within local schools.

Seat 3 features an intriguing contest between two current board members: James Burns and Mildred Douglas, both of whom bring years of experience in education to their campaigns, competing against newcomer Sonya Burns, who’s focusing on student safety and academic success.

In Seat 5, incumbent Windy Cole will defend her seat against challengers Corree Carelock and Melissa Harris. With various perspectives at play, Rock Hill voters have a significant decision ahead of them!

Clover and York: Uncontested Seats and New Faces

Over in Clover, there’s a mix of familiar faces and new contenders. Incumbent Jessica Cody is running unopposed, ensuring her continued influence on the Clover School Board. Meanwhile, Nataly Burgio and Kenda Cook are vying for the open Seat 4, with Burgio strongly advocating for educational transparency and community values.

York County’s elections are seeing three candidates running unopposed, allowing them to retain their seats effortlessly. However, for those races that are contested, such as Seat 3 between Delandris Jones and incumbent Chris Revels, voters will need to make informed choices based on the candidates’ platforms.

A Call to Action for Voters

This year’s school board elections are vital for shaping the local educational landscape. With candidates ready to tackle pressing issues, community members have a unique opportunity to make their voices heard. Whether through supporting familiar faces or newly emerged candidates, every vote counts.

As the elections approach, make sure to stay updated on your local candidates and participate in this important democratic process! Your vote could help steer the future of education in York County and impact countless students for years to come.
