York County Veteran: Serving Others After Personal Tragedy

York County Veteran Faces Struggle After Loss Amidst Helping Others

York County, S.C. — A local hero and Army veteran, Larry Globokar, is dealing with a personal tragedy just as he continues to help others suffering after Tropical Storm Helene. Globokar, who dedicated his time and resources to aid in recovery efforts, recently lost approximately $50,000 worth of equipment when an electrical fire destroyed his tool shed.

The Incident

The devastating fire occurred last Friday, leaving Globokar feeling emotional, yet he remains steadfast in his mission to assist those impacted by the storm. “Man, that was my sanctuary,” he shared about his shed, where he stored the equipment necessary for his volunteer work.

A Call to Serve

For the past month, Globokar has been focused on search, rescue, and recovery operations in western North Carolina. Drawing from his experience as a military veteran who served in Afghanistan, he described the area as “just as bad as a war zone over there; the only difference is we’re not getting shot at.” His deployment in this critical role requires a strong mental attitude, and despite his personal loss, his focus remains on helping others.

The Fire’s Discovery

The news of the fire reached Globokar while he was still engaged in his volunteer duties. Fortunately, his dog, Luna, alerted his wife to the emergency before it could worsen. “She started acting crazy, jumping on the bed, and started biting at the remote to turn the TV on,” Globokar recounted how Luna’s timely actions probably saved his family’s home.

Perspective on Loss

Despite the weight of losing his tools and equipment, Globokar maintains a humble perspective. “Things happen. Just all materialistic stuff,” he stated. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing the needs of those he is helping, saying, “Those people up there need real help. They need closure. You can buy materialistic things. You can’t buy closure.”

Moving Forward

This Friday morning, Globokar plans to return to western North Carolina to continue his arduous work. Once he completes his efforts there, he intends to head to eastern Tennessee to lend a hand in similar recovery efforts. His commitment to service remains unwavering.

Support for a Local Hero

In light of his recent loss, a GoFundMe page has been established to support Globokar’s recovery and rebuilding efforts. Community members who wish to assist can contribute to help him replace the tools necessary for his ongoing humanitarian work.

Globokar’s story stands as a testament to the compassion and resilience that defines many in the veteran community, illustrating how one person’s loss does not diminish their will to serve others in their times of need.
