York Hill Students Finding Support Amid Rising Food Costs
In Rock Hill, S.C., a growing number of college students are facing a common yet serious hurdle while trying to improve their lives through education: putting food on the table. The skyrocketing cost of food has hit many students hard, making it challenging for them to focus on their studies while worrying about their next meal. Fortunately, York Technical College has stepped in to help these students tackle food insecurity with innovative solutions that are making a real difference.
“The Wolf’s Den”: A Ray of Hope
One such initiative is “The Wolf’s Den,” a brand new food pantry located right on campus. Lamar Patterson, a dedicated student at York Tech, recently shared his experience with the challenges of high food prices. “Yes, I am a student, Yes, I do have a job, but still going to the stores, I have to manage my money better now,” he explained. “Because of this food pantry, it takes away a lot of stress of me going to the store and figuring out what I can afford to get.”
This pantry has become a lifeline for students like Lamar, alleviating some of the financial pressure they face during their school journey. School officials have recognized how essential food security is for academic success. In fact, York Tech President Stacey Moore noted that a new survey has revealed that a significant portion of students feel the pangs of hunger. “Imagine trying to study for an exam and you’re hungry,” Moore remarked. “The impact on our cognitive and physical abilities when we don’t have adequate nutrition is significant.”
More Than Just Food
The Wolf’s Den doesn’t stop at providing food; it also features a clothing closet where students can select professional attire for job interviews – all at no cost! This initiative has proven to be vital for students preparing to enter the workforce. The additional support allows students like Patterson to feel confident and presentable for interviews. “I love the way that I look in them, especially like business professional clothing,” he said with a smile. “I love being able to go out and be me.”
Transforming Spaces for Student Success
On the grounds of York Tech, the administration has taken an old child development center and transformed it into a focused student services facility. “In May we took our child development center and shifted it to student services, mainly a student services facility… almost 50% of students [use] our facility,” President Moore shared. This repurposing is part of a broader effort to foster an environment where students can thrive, not just academically, but in every aspect of their lives.
York Tech isn’t just stopping with food and clothing; officials are actively working on a new initiative aimed at providing affordable housing for students in the York County community. Though this plan is still in its infancy, it demonstrates a commitment to addressing the multifaceted challenges students face today.
