York Technical College Launches Food Pantry and Support Initiatives for Students Facing Food Insecurity

York Hill College Students Gaining Support Amid Rising Food Prices

ROCK HILL, S.C. — It’s a tough time for many college students who are striving to build a brighter future while managing their day-to-day ins and outs. With food prices skyrocketing, the challenge of putting food on the table has never felt more daunting for some. Thankfully, York Technical College in Rock Hill has stepped up with thoughtful solutions to help its students in need.

The school recently launched “The Wolf’s Den,” a food pantry designed specifically for students who are facing food insecurity. This new initiative has already brought some much-needed joy and relief to students like Lamar Patterson, who is balancing his studies while holding a job. He expressed how grateful he is to have access to the pantry. “Yes, I am a student. Yes, I do have a job, but still, going to the stores, I have to manage my money better now,” he shared. “Because of this food pantry, it takes away a lot of stress of me going to the store and figuring out what I can afford to get.”

Understanding Student Needs

York Technical College President, Stacey Moore, highlighted the significance of this effort. A survey conducted at the school revealed that a large number of students are grappling with food insecurity. Moore passionately stated, “Imagine trying to study for an exam and you’re hungry. So the impact on our cognitive and physical abilities when we don’t have adequate nutrition is significant.”

But the support doesn’t stop with food. The Wolf’s Den also has a clothing closet where students can choose professional outfits for interviews – all completely free of charge. This has been an absolute game-changer for students, giving them confidence as they step into the professional world.

A Renewed Focus on Student Services

In another ambitious move, the college is transforming an old child development center into a dedicated student services facility. Moore noted that almost 50% of students utilize this facility, making it a cornerstone of campus life. “In May we took our child development center and shifted it to student services,” she explained.

Students like Patterson are already taking full advantage of these new programs to carve out a better future. Patterson has particularly enjoyed picking out his work attire. “I love the way that I look in them, especially like business professional clothing,” he beamed. “I love being able to go out and be me.”

Looking Ahead: Affordable Housing Initiatives

York Technical College is not stopping at food and clothing assistance. School officials are also exploring a new program aimed at providing affordable housing for students in the York County community. While this housing initiative is still in its early stages, it reflects the college’s dedication to creating a holistic support system for its students.

As the college continues to roll out these essential programs, it’s clear that they are making a substantial impact on the lives of many. While students like Lamar Patterson work hard to achieve their goals, the support from York Technical College is helping to ease some of the burdens they face. It’s a wonderful reminder of how community and education can come together to create opportunities and support students as they pursue a brighter tomorrow.
