Hey there, fans of New Orleans! Tuesday night was a big deal for the Pelicans and their supporters, as they saw the return of their star player, Zion Williamson, who was back on the court after sitting out for 27 games due to a nagging hamstring strain. Let’s just say the atmosphere in the Smoothie King Center was electric!
As Zion made his much-anticipated return, you could feel the excitement bubbling in the air. Fans were pumped, and boy, he did not disappoint. From the very start, it was clear that there was no sign of rust on him. He quickly got into the groove, proving once again why he’s a fan favorite with some amazing dunks that had everyone on their feet!
Williamson kicked things off early with a putback dunk off a missed layup by Herbert Jones. But it was his second basket that really got the crowd roaring. On a fast break, he caught a lob from CJ McCollum and executed a two-handed alley-oop slam. Talk about a way to announce your return! The score was 16-8 in favor of the Timberwolves at that point, but Zion was just getting started.
The game had its ups and downs, and although the Pelicans tied the game at 54 by halftime, they struggled to keep the momentum. In the third quarter, with the crowd still buzzing, the Pelicans went on a scoring spree, and guess who was leading the charge? That’s right—Zion! He threw down a jaw-dropping 360 tomahawk slam after picking Anthony Edwards‘ pocket. The place erupted!
At one point, the Pelicans even extended their lead to 64-56. But just when it seemed like they could take control, the Minnesota Timberwolves, led by a powerhouse performance from Edwards, took back the reins, ultimately claiming a 104-97 victory.
With this loss, the Pelicans’ record now stands at a tough 7-30, and it’s been a season marred by injuries. Williamson’s injury struggles have become part of the Pelicans’ narrative since they made him the top pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. He has only played in 191 of the 427 regular-season games since joining the team, which is definitely not what anyone expected. This has been particularly frustrating because fans know just how dominant he can be when healthy.
Through the years, Williamson has had his share of injuries. He missed the entire 2021-22 season because of a foot issue, and even last season he only managed to play 70 games, which was finally his highest total in a single season. The injuries aren’t just affecting him, either; the Pelicans have been without fellow former All-Star Brandon Ingram, who has been out for the last 12 games due to an ankle injury. Other key players like Dejounte Murray, CJ McCollum, Herbert Jones, and Trey Murphy III have also faced significant time on the sidelines this season alongside Zion.
Even though it’s been a rough start, there is a glimmer of hope. Zion finished his comeback game with a solid stat line of 22 points, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals. He showed flashes of the former No. 1 pick and reminded everyone of just how impactful he can be.
Despite the injury issues, the Pelicans locked in a five-year, $197 million max extension for him in 2022, which runs through the 2027-28 season. There are still concerns, however, as the last three years of that contract aren’t fully guaranteed due to certain clauses linked to his playing time. Fans will certainly be keeping their fingers crossed for a healthier future.
So, as the New Orleans Pelicans continue to battle through this challenging season, it’ll be exciting to see how Zion’s return affects the team moving forward. With his blend of power and finesse on the court, Pelicans fans hope they can rally around him and turn this season around!
